MEETINGS

Consultations on the setting up of the Working Group on Internet Governance (WGIG) were held at the United Nations in Geneva on 20 and 21 September 2004. The establishment of the WGIG was requested last December by the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). Aim of the consultations was to develop a common understanding of structure and functioning of the Working Group. Discussions focused on the scope and working methods of the Working Group, as well as the profile, qualities and characteristics of its members.

The meeting was chaired by Nitin Desai, Special Adviser to the Secretary-General for the World Summit on the Information Society. Over 250 participants, representing Governments, civil society organizations and private sector entities, attended the consultations.
